Focus:
Westcoast Family Resources
Society - North Shore , and Family Services of the North Shore work
together to provide variety of services for families in our
community. We are part of the larger North Shore Youth and Family
Services and are funded by the Ministry of Children and Family
Development (MCFD). Services are free to families with children from
birth to nineteen years. Families using the Family Preservation and
Reunification Services are referred by MCFD. Family Support Services
and Parent Training and Education Groups are open to the community
through self-referral and open to MCFD referrals. We provide in-home
support that is strength-based and designed to increase safety and
stability in the family. The Parent Training and Education Groups
are designed to provide additional support, education and modelling
in parenting, child development, child management or problem
solving.
Goals:
We work to build stronger
families where children and youth can grow and develop to their
potential and are free from family violence. We strive to see that
children and youth have healthy non-violent role models and that
families have the capacity to care for their own children and
youth. We help involve families in community activities and work on
goals that are unique to each family by increasing family skills,
knowledge, positive change and independence.
Programs:
Family Preservation
and Unification Services are available to families referred
through MCFD. These services are intensive, goal oriented and
home-based with the intent to prevent out-of-home placement. We help
reconnect children in out-of-home care to their families and reduce
risk in the family. A Family Counselor is assigned to each family
and responds to their immediate or crisis, provides therapeutic and
educational interventions and connects the family to professional
and community-based resources
Associated services may
include specialized supervised visitation, group-based parent
training and education, specialized individual and group-based
therapeutic interventions and self-help /mutual aid.
Family Support
Services are available to families in need of informal
support through self-referral and referral by MCFD. Family support
services are community-based. Each family works with a Family
Counsellor to determine goals that are specific to each family.
Service is provided for eight weeks and could include outreach and
direct service, parent training and education, family violence
interventions, self-help/mutual aid/volunteer mentoring.
Family Support services are
reached by calling the North Shore Youth and Family Services Intake

Parent Training and
Education Groups are being run on an ongoing basis and
are free of charge. These groups address core parenting skills and
education and are shaped by participants who are encouraged to bring
their own topics to the group. Parents can register at any time and
join the group immediately by calling the program at 604-985-2202.
