Focus:

Westcoast Family Resources Society-Tri-Cities is a parent education and support resource for families with children from birth to twelve years of age. The areas that the program covers are Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody. Services are free of charge and referrals come from the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD). Self-referral is accepted for our special project groups such as Mother Goose, You Make the Difference, Family Drop-in and Teaching Kitchens.

Goals:

We strive to promote the safety and well-being of all children and families. Through our programs we hope to reduce isolation in the community and make the family unit stronger. One way we will help do this is by connecting families in the community resources such as neighbourhood drop-in centres. Our program focuses on helping families become more independent and self-sustaining. We help parents learn more about what it means to be a parent, learn coping skills and come to know about the ages ad stages of children. Through providing in-home support to families we help promote physical, emotional and social development of parents and children.

Programs:

The In-home Outreach Program offers home visits by a Family Support Worker who helps with parenting skills and discusses family goals with parents. Through outings in the community, parents  learn to create connections between family and community. They learn how to build on skills and increase the skills they have as they focus in their needs and the needs of their children. While in the program, families are monitored through an Integrated Case Management process.

Support Facilitation is a program in partnership with MCFD and SHARE Family and Community Services. The Support Facilitator visits the family home and works with the parent to create a plan for the family and prevent the need for a child protection investigation. This plan will help the family meet its own needs and create lasting ties with other community services.

The Mother Goose Program uses song and storyline to help with language skills  and improve speech, memory, classification and sequencing. The program helps parent and child become closer. It will make both parties feel good about themselves as learners and teachers. The Mother Goose Program also helps put parents in touch with community resources as they meet other parents.

Partnership with Birchland School and Tri-Cities Family Place offers Family Drop-ins to play, learn and connect with others. This program is open to parents/caregivers and their children from birth to five years old.

Through Teaching Kitchens, participants work with a Cook who instructs them how to make nutritional, low-cost meals. Participants take home two to three meals for their families. There is s small feel to cover the cost of the food that is taken home.

You Make the Difference is a group for parents with young children. Parents learn ways to interact in a manner that stimulates development and attachment with their children.
